The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
