The North London club has declared that its disputed sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June of next year.
This deal, estimated to cost around £10 million annually, was first established and has since been heavily criticized.
The backlash stems from Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 forces in persistent fighting in the eastern part of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In February, Arsenal was criticized for committing a disrespectful act to the government of the DRC by failing to convene with Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner to address the sponsorship.
Visit Rwanda operates as a division of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a government department.
It is widely believed that Arsenal signed and continued this partnership chiefly to increase their African supporter base.
Nevertheless, the deal has now ended after both parties “jointly decided” to end their collaboration.
“Jointly, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have outperformed the initial objectives of the partnership – advocating preservation and eco-friendly travel, encouraging numerous followers to visit the nation, and creating a lasting foundation for travel industry expansion,” stated an official Arsenal statement.
The statement continued that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's ambition to become an global sports center in Africa and host more global sporting events while implementing community soccer programs that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches develop their skills and promote increased engagement in sports throughout the nation.
Richard Garlick, Arsenal's chief executive officer, described the partnership as a “major expedition” and stated it had been “propelling” the club's aspirations.
Yet this view was contested by a segment of the club's followers, with the protest movement Arsenal Peace Advocates staging protests outside the Emirates Stadium during the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain in April's conclusion.
Protesters displayed a placard declaring “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and provided wristbands to conceal the Visit Rwanda logo on jerseys.
In the same month, PSG renewed their partnership deal with Visit Rwanda until 2028.
Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid signed a fresh deal for the same period that has caused the logo being carried on the Madrid-based team's male and female kits.
