Figures from both sides of the political spectrum and the Hollywood world are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on social media to label the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". The post, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the anger he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Police have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was established at a substantial amount.
The response to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.
This is a disgusting and despicable statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the remarks. She referenced previous rhetoric from Trump about political violence, asking, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just lost it. Now implying the Reiners caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
A number of GOP lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He publicly dared members in his party to justify the comments.
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and denounced political violence unequivocally following the shooting of another political figure.
Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
