Czech Republic's Populist Prime Minister-Elect Refuses to Sell Business Empire Amid Conflict-of-Interest Row

Andrej Babiš, the self-styled tycoon who won the recent parliamentary vote, has refused to offload his vast business interests, while insisting he will resolve a ethical dilemma that might block him from assuming the position of prime minister.

Position on Corporate Empire

Babiš, whose ANO party emerged victorious in the autumn election but did not secure a parliamentary majority, declared in a social media post that he would not sell his Agrofert conglomerate, which is active in agriculture, food production, and chemical industries.

“I have consistently said I will not sell Agrofert. I have consistently stated I will address the ethical issue in accordance with national and European laws,” Babiš commented. “This is not like selling a roll in a bakery.”

President's Demand

The head of state, Petr Pavel, announced that the 71-year-old populist must clarify openly how he will eliminate conflicts of interest arising from his business activities before assuming the role of prime minister.

The Czech constitution “explicitly requires the head of state to take into account the potential occurrence of a ethical issue and the possibilities for its resolution” when selecting government ministers, the presidential administration noted.

The head of state “wants it to be clear in what specific way Andrej Babiš will fulfil his constitutional and legal obligations”, the statement said, stating that Pavel was prepared to appoint Babiš as prime minister “without delay” once the matter was resolved.

Business Operations and Regulatory Issues

Babiš's numerous companies, mostly under the Agrofert umbrella, operate in the nation and other central European countries, benefiting from millions of euros in national and EU farming and other grants, as well as government deals.

Under national legislation, cabinet members cannot obtaining state support or contracts. The anti-corruption organization Transparency International has indicated that to prevent a ethical breach, Babiš must either divest, decline government deals, or stay out of public office.

Past Tenure and Present Intentions

Babiš affirmed he would “follow the laws” if appointed as premier, but did not want to detail how in beforehand because the matter was “an highly personal and personal matter for me, and journalists will always criticise me regardless”.
