Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution

Democratic officials voiced outrage after former President Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and stated they should be detained and penalized "with execution" following their publication of a contentious video.

The Recording That Triggered the Dispute

The video footage, published on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in military or defense positions.

"Like us, you all made an pledge to safeguard and uphold this national charter," the lawmakers affirmed in the short video. "At present, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from overseas, but from right here at home. Our statutes are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can reject unlawful commands, you must decline illegal orders. No one has to execute orders that break the law or our national charter."

Donald Trump's Incensed Reaction

The video message seemed to provoke a furious response from the previous commander-in-chief.

On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional message, he wrote: "This represents really concerning, and Harmful to our Nation. Their comments cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Officials Respond

Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats issued a unified statement condemning the comments.

"Violent politics has no place in the United States," they declared. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all worked our United States with tremendous loyalty and distinction. We clearly censure Donald Trump's offensive and harmful calls for execution against members of Congress, and appeal to GOP representatives to strongly do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the protection of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must right away delete these extreme digital publications and recant his dangerous rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the declaration continued.

Officials' Strong Reaction

The officials who were featured in the video also issued a response.

"We are former service members and security experts who value this country and made an pledge to protect and support the founding document of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we plan to keep it. No threat, pressure, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that sacred duty."

"The significant point is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by death for us to restate the statutes," they continued. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their backs as they carry out their pledge to the founding principles and responsibility to obey only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They continued: "Every American must join forces and denounce the former president's calls for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a moment for principled stance."

Further Partisan Responses

The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the death of public representatives."

He added: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this right away and without qualification."

The Republican House speaker supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of the government advising troops to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in American history."

The Republican leader also according to sources told the press that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to analyze the terminology and determine all that."

Administration Statement

During a White House press conference on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Would the president want to execute elected officials?", the executive branch representative responded: "Certainly not."

"It's important to note about what the former president is responding to," the representative stated. "There are current representatives of the American legislature who coordinated to organize a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to serving soldiers urging them to defy the commander in chief's proper directives."

She said: "The integrity of our armed forces rests on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially encouraging."
