Flight Delays in America Expected to Intensify, Transport Chief Warns

US air traffic controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid amid the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official told a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been absent, causing airports to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to setbacks due to weather and other issues.

More than 3,000 US flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy said he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," he remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their worries directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, can I secure an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated travel would be held up due to a lack of employees - among the peak after the shutdown started.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second-longest halt in history.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was safe to fly in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," Duffy stated.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The FAA alert was issued at 08:45 local time on Sunday. Many flights were operating normally before noon.

Flights at Newark Airport, however, were delayed an mean of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airport in the US, could experience problems from low staffing in the afternoon.

The agency warned passengers in the state to check with airlines about updated departure times.

The issue comes ahead of Game 3 of the championship, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and about one month before the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to travel by air in the United States.

Pressure on American aviation helped end a government shutdown in 2019. Back then, the halt had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including aviator instruction.

It prompted several air traffic controllers to stay home on the same day on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping movement at New York's LaGuardia airport.

That same day, the former president, who at the period was in his first term as president, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the federal closure after 35 days.
