Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
