New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities shared video stills Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
