The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that sparked debate throughout his election bid.
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, did not confirm this decision immediately after his victory in November.
"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda voters supported," Mamdani said in his announcement.
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its abundance of immigrant communities and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will always live within me and my work," he affirmed.
During his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.
But his rivals, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing although he is from a prominent family.
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a space for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his modest Astoria home.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated consistent with the home's original era.
The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, a policy where the city sets limits on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent outpaces the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
