Oscar-Nominated Star Diane Ladd, Known For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at 89 Years Old.

The Oscar-nominated actress the celebrated Diane Ladd has died at the age of 89.

This actress, with filmography featured National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, died at her home at her Ojai, California home. Her passing was announced through a message from her child, award-winning actress Laura Dern.

Laura Dern, who performed alongside her mom in various films like Rambling Rose, described her as “my incredible hero and my profound gift as a mother”, noting that she was present as she died.

“She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, star, artist along with compassionate soul that seemed almost dreamlike,” she stated. “We were lucky to have her. She is now with the angels.”

Early Career and Major Success

Ladd’s early career included minor parts on television series including Perry Mason and the seventies saw her starring with actor Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

During that year, 1974, she shared the screen alongside Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s celebrated film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. Her role landed Ladd an Academy Award nomination as best supporting actress.

Subsequent Years

In the 1980s, she starred in the dramatic film Black Widow as well as funny follow-up National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation while also joining the show Alice, a sitcom derived from the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

In the following decade, she received a further best supporting actress nomination for her part in Lynch’s Wild at Heart, a cult classic where she acted as the mom of her biological child Laura Dern’s role. The next year she obtained an additional nod for her acting in Rambling Rose which also starred her daughter.

“This was the picture that Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she brought us to London for a premiere and a celebration in our honor,” Ladd said regarding Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, grasping our hands, with tears, seeing us act.”

During 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with a pulmonary condition and informed she only had half a year left yet she recovered completely after her daughter moved her to a different hospital.

“When you use your pain and not let it back up similar to a wound, instead use it to discover, to illuminate the way for yourself and others, then you are winning,” Ladd remarked.
