Southern California Battles Historic Heat Only One Week After Severe Winter Storm.

After enduring heavy downpours that caused flooding across sections of the city, the City of Angels is now seeing unusually warm conditions for this time of year.

Record-Shattering Readings

During the day Friday, the mercury soared to 91°F (33°C) in central LA, as reported by weather officials. This breaks the old record for this date, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was set just last year.

"Exceptionally warm weather" were labeled on forecast graphics for the region.

Public Health Warnings

Forecasters issued a warning that Friday's heat posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their advice included:

• Drinking plenty of fluids.
• Limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
• Not leaving kids or animals unattended in a parked vehicle.

A Dramatic Weather Swing

This sudden spike in heat comes on the heels of a massive winter storm that battered the region last week. That storm delivered thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to higher elevations, leading to flash flood warnings for many residents.

Tragically, the conditions also resulted in a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.

Temperatures Easing

Looking ahead a cooldown is expected. Readings were forecast to decrease to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city by late Friday.

Several cities that hit the 90-degree mark were Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Meanwhile, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were expected to see the high eighties.

For the weekend, downtown Los Angeles can anticipate weather in the eighties, with a further cooldown on tap for the week ahead.
