The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

Now that Season 1 of the hit series wrapping up—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.

Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception

One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.

“It's like being force fed something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

A Pressing Query: Does the showrunner See the Ending of Pluribus?

Given that Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.

“We have some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, why mess with the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
