Among every adult-oriented cartoon movies I’ve ever watched, nothing has stuck with me quite like the fear-filled conclusion of a viscerally violent and deeply subversive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, this Spain-based filmmaker created a grim, bleak and often savage world with several minor , forlorn hints of optimism.
While The Unicorn Wars appears as it came from an impulse to push the medium further, the filmmaker explained that it was rather an attempt to communicate a universal, cross-cultural message regarding “the mutual source of every conflict.”
That message is communicated via a squad of vividly colored bears , openly modeled after a famous series of cuddly characters.
Growing up in a community built around warmongering as well as the defense industry, a lot of these animals are obsessed with exterminating unicorns, thanks to a religious scripture that claims the bears they were once masters of the woodland, before the horned beings expelled them.
A few did not entirely accepted the brainwashing, , prefer to experiment with substances or mate in the forest.
Unlike their gentle equivalents, these colorful critters display genitals and clear urges.
For a certain especially vicious, cynical bear, the bear named Bluey, the war against unicorns becomes a road to control — and especially to dominance above his more tender, kinder brother Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor , a seeming sociopath , and when fear takes over his unit and claims his teammates sequentially, he takes increasingly control for himself, through ever more bloody, destructive ways.
At the same time, the horned creatures are experiencing their own horror, through an expanding, harmful creature in their habitat.
“At the beginning, it seems like a humorous movie,” the director commented. “But then it becomes a more dramatic and sorrowful film. And in the finale, it becomes a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars begins resembling among the playful films from a legendary filmmaker, that discover a wicked pleasure in allowing drawn beings curse, engage in violence, or have intimate relations.
Afterward it evolves into closer to a more grim work from the same director, featuring progressively visual gore , a noticeable relation to the actual tragedy of battle.
By the end, it is a complete extreme drama bloodbath.
The fear that makes this a perfect Halloween viewing begins much sooner than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted lovers of violence, for enthusiasts of intense movies who wish to watch a movie they have not watched previously, and who can handle a narrative which delivers absolutely no punches.
View it in a dark room without any distractions, and that ending will crawl into your mind and linger.
