In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this charming family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
