Three Lions Coach Reveals The Philosophy: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

Ten years back, Anthony Barry featured for Accrington Stanley. Today, he's dedicated on helping Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in 2026. The road from the pitch to the sidelines started through volunteering coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his calling.

Staggering Ascent

The coach's journey has been remarkable. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he established a name with creative training and great man-management. His roles at clubs took him to top European clubs, and he held roles with national teams across multiple countries. He has worked with stars like world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the peak in his words.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a structured plan enabling us to have the best chance.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Working every hour under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, they both push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies involve psychological profiling, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. He stresses the national team spirit and dislikes phrases including "pause".

“It's not time off or a rest,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”

Greedy Coaches

Barry describes himself along with the manager as highly ambitious. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” he states. “We seek to command the whole ground and that's our focus most of our time to. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead of changes but to beat them and set new standards. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We must implement a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we have to make it so clear in that period. We need to progress from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To create a system that allows us to be productive in that window, it's crucial to employ all the time available since we took the job. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections among them. We must dedicate moments communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

He is getting ready for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. England have guaranteed qualification after six consecutive victories and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.

“We are both certain that the style of play ought to embody all the positives about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The fitness, the adaptability, the robustness, the integrity. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.

“For it to feel easy, we need to provide a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.

“You can gain psychological edges for managers at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information now. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. Our aim is to speed up play through midfield.”

Thirst for Improvement

Barry’s hunger for improvement is relentless. While training for his pro license, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, especially as his class included stars like Lampard and Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he sought out tough situations imaginable to hone his presentations. Including a prison locally, where he also took inmates for a training session.

He earned his license as the best in his year, with his thesis – about dead-ball situations, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard was among those impressed and he brought Barry on to his staff with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that the club got rid of most of his staff while keeping Barry.

The next manager with the club took over, within months, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he recruited Barry from Chelsea to rejoin him. The FA consider them a duo akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
